Description
Children, like adults, experience stress and may be affected when exposed to traumatic or stressful life events and encounter effects to their ability to cope with life’s stressors.
Research shows that mental health concerns can be traced to challenges occurring in infancy and childhood. As a child care professional the key to supporting children’s mental health is to provide consistent care, support, and positive interactions to assist children with maintaining low stress while building trust.
This 4-hour course bundle will address the importance of children’s mental health and explore strategies you can use to build resilience in children and families.
Courses in this bundle include:
- Prioritizing Mental Health: A Roadmap for Resilience After Trauma
The coronavirus pandemic led to restrictions for everyone around the world. It caused a disconnect from face-to-face relationships between people, including children. The need to limit in-person contact led to an awareness suggesting that although some were coping reasonably well, others struggled emotionally. Some experienced vicious cycles of increasing distress.
This course examines the consequences of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and extreme stress that can compromise the emotional well-being of children (and adults).
We will unpack the concept of resilience and its role in healing while looking at signs of trauma and ways to reduce the negative impact of traumatic experiences.
- The Early Years: Infant and Toddler Mental Health
The interactions and experiences that occur between infants and adults in their lives sets the foundation for the wiring and architecture of the brain. Consistent and responsive caregivers positively influence healthy social-emotional development.
This course will outline the effects exposure to stress has on children's development, the impact relationships and interactions have on development and attachment styles, along with ways to support infant and toddler mental health in a learning environment.
- Calming Thoughts: Supporting Children with Anxiety
Most people are no strangers to the occasional anxious thought, including young children. Like adults, children can experience anxiety, and anxiety that begins to affect their everyday lives becomes something that might need to be addressed.
This course will share general information about anxiety, illustrate how it tends to look in young children, and include ways adults can provide appropriate support to a young child who is experiencing anxiety that is impacting their everyday learning and interactions.
- Secure Connections: The Relationship Between Trauma and Attachment Styles
Young children depend exclusively on parents/caregivers for survival and protection — both physically and emotionally. Without the support of a trusted caregiver to help regulate their strong emotions, children may experience overwhelming stress, which can affect an individual’s ability to build healthy relationships and attachments.
This course will outline the various types of trauma and the effects trauma has on a child’s development and attachment style, along with ways to support children with trauma history in a classroom setting.
